powerball mania heating up. good morning, america. >> one -- just one winning ticket for the record powerball jackpot worth almost $600 million. so, where was it sold? and more importantly, who's holding on to it? this morning, the search is on for this morning's multimillionaire. massive twister. look at this twister menacing central kansas. more than 200 reports of severe weather in a dozen states. hail the size of baseballs and today, a danger zone that spans 1,000 miles. ginger zee, leading our extreme team. success stories. michelle obama's special sendoff to high school graduates heading off to college. her message -- there are things that matter more than grades. and the star stalker. oscar winner jennifer lawrence harassed. unannounced visits and hundreds of voice mail messages.
8:01 am
and why alleged stalker called lawrence his biblical mary. and good morning, america. a lot happening overnight, including one lucky lottery winner waking up to a whole new world this morning. >> a whole new world. i can't even imagine. the big question now, who's sitting on a winning ticket worth $590 million? we know one thing, it's not ron claiborne. >> you were pounding on that bodega door to no avail. >> you know what, next time. i got the numbers. >> keep this thing going. >> here they are. here are the winning numbers -- 10, 13, 14, 22, 52 and powerball 11. >> the ticket was sold at a supermarket, zephyrhills, a town outside of tampa and ben kennedy
8:02 am
is right there this morning. ben, good morning to you, sir. >> reporter: good morning, dan and bianna. kind of hard to believe that someone is waking up more than half a billion dollars richer. and odds are, they don't even know it. just outside of tampa. you can see right now the doors are locked and closed. you bet once this store is open, this is going to be all the talk. the big question this morning is, who won? is it a person or possibly group? after taxes, roughly $370 million. nothing to complain. to set the scene, this is zephyrhills, a very small community about 10,000 people. they're not used to this -- right now in the parking lot is filled with satellite trucks and local media. i ran into a couple of shoppers here that were at the atm. they had no idea that this was the winning store. might get a small cut possibly.
8:03 am
i want to show you guys real quick, this is a losing powerball ticket, it's actually mine, we're looking for the winner. i think half the fun of playing the lottery is the what if moment. if you won, what would you do? one person or possibly a group they have that tough decision this morning. dan? bianna? >> only you could see instant video of them reacting to that in the news they were the winner. thank you so much, ben. we appreciate it. and so many powerball tickets were sold. there was an 80% chance, virtual guarantee there would be a winner since every combination was in play. now, the jackpot resets to a cool 40 million bucks. as we have seen, it doesn't take long before that number soars. our coverage continues with gio benitez. >> reporter: bianna, good morning.
8:04 am
2013 has seen some of the largest jackpots ever. this one took only 13 consecutive draws to reach record-breaking numbers. those lucky numbers have been drawn and the grand prize winner is out there. ending the craziest, highest powerball jackpot yet. >> powerball, let's do it! $600 million. >> tonight, we got a guaranteed jackpot it's worth 40, 50, 70 -- >> reporter: this jackpot has been ballooning for six weeks. stopping at $590.5 million. beating the old powerball record. by 3.5 million. >> four, five hours, people keep coming to buy. >> reporter: yesterday, in just one hour, texas sold over 1 million tickets, with sales for the day averaging a whopping $36,000 a minute. >> ladies and gentlemen, please single file line. >> reporter: the jackpot grew so dramatically in pa because the price per ticket went up from $1 to $2 and now 43 states have the game.
8:05 am
plus d.c. and the virgin islands. playing a big role in the record-breaking jackpot is california. >> california joined since the first of april and that made it draw even faster. >> reporter: the website powerball.com, crashed directly after the drawing. there are over 230 million tickets with the wrong numbers. while the one winning ticket was sold at a grocery store in florida. so, now, it starts all over again. with 40 million up for grabs. i'm thinking the more office pools we do, the better chance we have. >> i like the way you think, i like the way you think, gio. let's bring in the executive director of the multistate lottery. he is in urbandale, iowa. chuck, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> let me put you on the hot seat a little bit. yesterday on the broadcast you said that the jackpot may very well go up, north of 650 million
8:06 am
bucks, which would have been the biggest in american history. instead, it appears it has gone down to $590 million and we're feeling slightly ripped off. what is going on? >> i have to take the blame here. normally that -- we would hit those sales. but the competing jackpots took the winds out of the sails a little bit. the states sold even more tickets due to the competing jackpots. yes, i have to take the hit and i apologize for that. we came in pretty close to where we were, still a record. not where i thought quite we where would be. >> you mean the mega millions that was also going on this weekend, i assume. >> exactly. >> when will we know who won the powerball? >> well, that is entirely up to the winner. of course, they're anonymous to the lottery, we have no idea if it's one person or a group of people.
8:07 am
or somebody driving through the suburb of tampa bay. >> what is your advice to someone waking up richer? finding themselves $590 million richer? take your time? announce yourself right away? what would you advise? >> well, i would sign the back of the ticket, if it were me, i would put it an envelope and duct tape it to my chest. powerball millionaire with a nasty rash. >> all right. hopefully, someone has a nasty rash that will have plenty of money to heal. bianna, over to you. >> duct tape or superglue. take your pick. we'll turn now to the extreme weather hitting a large part of the country, dozen states battered by severe storms. two of those states hit by reported tornadoes. and it's not over yet. more severe weather is on the way and extreme team
8:08 am

article this morning, saying that this small office in cincinnati that inappropriately targeted the tea party groups was understaffed and confused. and former people who worked in the office saying, this wasn't political, just misguided. is this likely to be seen as useful new information? or dismissed the liberal "new york times" defending the president? >> it depends on who's reading the story. it's not going to stop the investigations. there's going to be another hearing in the senate finance committee this week. the big question is, did anyone in the white house know about this targeting as it was happening? the white house said they didn't know about it until this spring. was there any direction to the irs from the white house? if the answer to those two questions is no, this isn't going to go very far. some irs officials have lost their jobs. other irs leaders have to answer questions about why they didn't tell congress earlier about this. unless you can draw this tightly to the white house, this may lead to some changes in the irs and this program. but i don't think the idea of a scandal will continue.
